These headphones punch way above their weight.
The Koss KPH30iK are incredible for around $30. They’re super lightweight, comfortable for long listening sessions, and have a simple, clean look that doesn’t feel cheap. Sound quality is where they really stand out. They have a warm, balanced tuning with fuller bass than you’d expect from an open on-ear design. Mids are clear and natural, making vocals sound especially good, and the treble is smooth and easy. They sound open and lively, not thin or compressed, and easily outperform many headphones that cost significantly more. Build quality is basic but smart. The lightweight plastic construction keeps them comfortable, and while they don’t feel premium, they also don’t feel fragile. If you want great sound on a tight budget, these are an easy recommendation. A true classic from Koss and one of the best values in headphones. On a side note, I would also recommend the Koss Potra Pros.

I am in love with these
While I wouldn't classify myself as being an audio snob, I do have decent collection of various headphones (some are good, some are meh), which include but are not limited to the Sennheiser HD598 & HD700, Epos G6 Pro, HE400se, V-Moda Crossfade Wireless and two generations of Skullcandy Crushers (1st + Evo). Most of my wired audio is hooked up to the Sennheiser GSX 1000 DAC/AMP, nothing fancy but geared towards computer use (Music, Gaming and productivity use). The Koss KPH30i headphones are by far one of my favorite. I'd put them up their with my Sennheiser HD598s in terms of sound, not the same but they hit in the same general ball park. If I had to explain the difference between the two, the Senns are more punchy and warm, while the Koss headphones are buttery smooth and warm. They work extremely well for gaming with the GSX 1000's virtual surround, and for music the audio just melts into your ears assuming its the right genre. I'm talking about new retrowave and anything with a bit of synth in it. Lo-fi is great. 80s Metal works well. In fact almost everything from the 80s will sound awesome. Some examples include Michael Jackson's Billie Jean, Wang Chung's Dance Hall Days, Duran Duran's Rio, Oingo Boingo's Weird Science and Billy Idol's White Wedding to name a few. Comfort wise, they are so light I forget that I am wearing them. Default pads are uncomfortable, so I highly recommend slapping some Yaxi pads on them OR Grado G cushions. In short, I highly recommend these. They are not going to be the best headphone money can buy, but they will hit well above their weight class, so much so I find myself wearing using them more than any of the other headphones I have on hand. If I was in the market for a pair of Sennheiser open backs, I would buy these first as they get you close to that territory for very little money, and more importantly they are addictingly fun. They lose a bit of detail, but offer up a buttery smooth experience that is both warm and slightly intimate. Note: The headband is not the most sturdy. It will probably break at some point. If that happens, or the wire goes out, before you chuck them in the trash remember you can replace the headband and even mod the cables to be detachable. Its extremely easy and cheap to do, and there is a ton of content available showing how to do this. These are heavily moddable headphones.

A solid sounding cheap thrill, right out of the box
I've been through various headphones the past few years and most of them ended up gathering dust. The only models I currently use regularly are my older Klipsch ImageOnes, and my newer sublime (but heavy and not very portable) planar magnetic Hifiman HE400Is. I also invested in a pair of mini AKG Quincy Jones (I went back later and compared both: the AKG 460s are WAY too strident, aggressive-sounding, lack detail, and the bass can be muddy, compared to the Koss, and are less comfortable), and those are good for portable use also, don't get me wrong, but I still yearned for a truly lightweight, portable pair of phones that sounded a bit warmer than the AKGs proved to. I also picked up some new Cyberdrive electrostatic hybrids, which, sadly, ended up sounding pretty brittle and harsh and were just not great. Well, I haven't owned Koss headphones in years, heard good things about the PortaPros, ended up researching these which are even more lightweight, well, out of the box, they sound damned good! Much punchier and warmer than I would have thought for the price. They are a bit flimsy and of course, aren't constructed like a huge pair of AKGs or ATs or Beats, or whatever, but for lightweights they are super comfy and feel like air on your head. No massive clamping force whatsoever. So far, the bass is solid and punchy, deep as advertised, mids are good, they don't sound muddy at all to me, highs I can tell might need some EQing or tweaking, but overall, these already sound pleasing to me, I don't like neutral headphones, usually, especially not for portable use, and I cannot stand portable phones that need too much power to drive, which these do not. They do sound voiced a bit more emphasizing the bottom end, but for me that's a plus, I love good, solid, not overpowering, bass. I"m not detecting any distortion or weirdness in the chain so far, running these through my old Ipod Classic and a new Topping NX1 headphone amp. Koss may really have something here. I almost invested in a large over the ear Koss pair of studios, but it didn't suit my on the go requirements. I already have headphones for home use and the Klipsch still perform well for either use. These seem to be a nice alternative to either, and can go anywhere and are so light you barely notice them on yer head! And the price was reasonable. These Koss KPH30iks so far, remind me a lot of my old later 80s pair of Sennheiser over the ear phones, the ones that had the light yellow foam earpads. They were lightweight but very snappy-sounding headphones that were open or semi-open back. They are not made any longer, but I wish they were. The Koss seem like a nice new version of those headphones, and I'm glad they are putting these out. Just proves you don't have to spend $500 for a good sounding pair of headphones. Of course the Hifimans, Grados, Beyers, are going to sound better, or high end AKG 701s, or whatever, but you are also going to be pissed off lugging them around and having to high-power amp them to even get good sound out of them. Not so these! Packaging was nice, simple, attractive and no-nonsense. This pair of phones look a lot more understated and less garish or dated than the PortaPros, but still retain some 80s retro chic. I'm listening right now to David Bowie's Shake It from Let's Dance, the kick drum is monster! I'm very pleasantly surprised with the Koss and I just received them, usually a good sign. You could do worse buying cheap awful earbuds or whatever, even some new JBL BT phones I got last year I ended up junking cause they were super distorted and horrid, a disaster, and even a new pair of Fostex studios sounded terrible and thin. The Koss actually blow both of the latter out of the water. Which is scary considering the brands I'm comparing them to.

These sound stunning. They punch WAY above their price bracket in terms of clarity, technicality, tonal colour. The soundstaging is pretty eh.. they are open backs so I would not wear them on transport but they are SO light and they feel like nothing. They are on ear headphones so for me at least, after a while the clamping becomes quite unbearable especially because it pushes the ear onto my head and my it starts to hurt. I modded mine with the KOSS foam pads and I removed the foam from infront of the speaker unit and from inside the headphone and it improved clarity so much. it also helped just a little bit with soundstaging but not a lot. Overall an amazing headphone. The build quality is a bit budget but in my book thats actually a really good thing. It's light and when you fiddle around or try to mod it, you dont feel stressed you might break something. you can see where things are clipped and attached therefore you can see how you can open it up. New and premium headphones love to hide and glue and seal the seams and it just makes modding or repairing so much harder. These remind me of the days when music players were a dedicated device and the fact that they still sound so amazing is so nice.

This is a very light headset. This clear version is as close as we can get to a budget open back headphone. Easy to listen to. Great for both music and gaming.
