Question 1

Does it improve the speed and by how much - it says on the bumph that it can go up to 750mbps - what are your experiences of this? Thanks

Accepted Answer

Your speed is set at the modem/router. This is dictated by a number of conditions:1) The package you are on with your ISP.2) If you are on regular broadband, then how far you are away from the exchange.3) The quality of your phone line. Whether it's copper or aluminium etc.4) The condition of you phone cable & wiring setup inside the house.5) Even the modem you use can affect sync speeds by as much as 10/20% in certain situations.6) Whether your phone line has REIN/Crosstalk.7) Whether the DSLAM you are connected to is too congested.etc, etc.All these conditions (& more) determine your sync rate.Powerlines, repeaters, extenders are devices which pickup your existing broadband speed & signal & attempt to allow you to gain access to it in another part of the house. They cannot increase your basic connection speed as that's already set by your modem & the DLSAM. They simply take what you already have & boost the signal to another part of your home where you are having access/speed/signal issues. So great to have upstairs if your modem is downstairs & you want a stronger more stable signal in the bedroom etc.As for speeds quoted on these devices. They are based upon the transmission of your internal network. So if you have a lot of devices set up & you want to transmit large files between them then you want to do it in the shortest time possible, so need higher speeds. Say an upstairs pc with a blu-ray movie & you want to play it in your media device in the living room or if you download files via NAS direct from the router & want to transmit them to a pc etc. If you are simply looking to browse the web etc, then the lower speed ones marked at 300 will work fine for your average user.
