Can this be used in the woods over an open fire?

You would need a support surface to place the Grillstone over the fire. It can't be used on an open fire.

How porous is it? Does it have a rough or smooth texture?

It is a smooth texture with small little indents from the volcanic porous rock. It's not rough to the touch, if that makes any sense.

Can you use this in the oven?

No, according to the manufacturer: "Do not use this product on stove tops or in ovens. The grillstone is intended for use on outdoor barbecues only."

can this be used over a campfire to sear steaks? ideally it should sustain 600+ deg temperatures.

My understanding is not to place the stone even on a bbq when hot as it might crack. I would be hesitant to try a campfire but you could contact the company directly.
